Hearth and Hamlet Research Pages and How to Switch

If scouting is sitting in Hunting but the research icon does not show it, you are on the wrong book page. Phorust: there is a turn-page button in the corner of the book when extra pages exist — it looks like a bent page corner. You can also click the Hunting icon in the notification to jump to that page.
The book is the tree
The full release does not use a huge classic tech grid as the only view. Players describe a research/upgrade book with chapter tabs. Extra pages hide behind a folded corner. Official screenshots of the live UI show a bottom Research button next to Build and Shop.
| Want to open | Do this |
|---|---|
| Next page in the same book | Click the bent page corner |
| Hunting / scouting page | Click the Hunting notification icon |
| A chapter you already visited | Use the chapter tabs — they may move |
| Close the book on purpose | Click off the book; there is no confirmed always-on X yet |
A separate thread asked the studio to stop moving the icon tabs and to add a real X close button. Accidental closes were common on stream. Phorust said the moving tabs were meant to feel like turning chapters, may have been overdone, and that the full version adds UI scaling plus a glow on unresearched tech.
If a node “does not exist”
- Turn the page. Scouting is the example the community already hit.
- Drop UI scaling or enable Auto UI Scaling if the corner is off-screen (pinned known issues).
- Save and exit if the incoming-enemy tracker is also in the wrong place after a resolution change (same known-issues list).
- Only then assume a bug.
Steam Deck and small laptops hit this harder because UI elements render off-screen. See Steam Deck Support.
Once you can actually see Hunting, buy scouting before you argue about soldier counts. See Best Research to Unlock First and Enemy Army Strength Explained.
From Community Gameplay
- The research UI is a book. Building pages (fishing, hunting, blacksmith, market) get extra sheets. A bent corner turns the page; a glowing candle means you can afford something. (Campfire Kingdom, 07:11; K full start, 1:15:15)
- Library research later sells blueprints (advanced → expert → master → legendary). Late upgrades hard-gate on those shop items, not on a second tech tree. (Campfire Kingdom, 2:00:22)
