How to Unlock the Cathedral in Hearth and Hamlet

The Cathedral in Hearth and Hamlet is a Church upgrade, not a map pin. You need it for consecrated weapons against late zombies. Cost is high and not yet

8/20/2026 Last updated: 8/20/2026

Last verified: August 20, 2026 — Hearth and Hamlet full release on Steam (app 4315040, launched August 19, 2026). Demo numbers are not treated as live data.

The Cathedral is not a separate building on the map. In the full release it is the upgraded form of the Church. The quest shows up after swamp / undead pressure: research Consecrated Weapons there. One long 1.0 run saw Ancient Evil −40% happiness until that Church upgrade landed. Exact wood/stone/gold costs still vary by difficulty and are not a single published table.

Why you cannot find it on the map

A full-release player wrote that they were far into the game, zombies attacked every 30 seconds, and the quest said to build a Cathedral for consecrated weapons. They checked the map “100 times” and there was no arrow.

Two replies settled the location:

If you are staring at the world map looking for a unique Cathedral plot, stop. Open the Church and look for its upgrade. Official screenshots also show a stone Keep and a Town Square; those are different buildings.

What the Cathedral is for

The quest text players quote is about consecrated weapons versus zombies. The developer added that after the upgrade, zombies stop being a real threat. That is the live-build purpose. It is not a generic “big church” cosmetic.

On hardest difficulty the same player said resources were falling because of the zombie onslaught and it felt easy to soft-lock if the army failed. The developer disagreed with the soft-lock fear — see the next section and What to Do After Cathedral.

From Community Gameplay

  • Quest text in a late 1.0 run: harvesting swamp magic stirred an ancient evil. Weapons did little; “Build a cathedral and use it to research consecrated weapons.” (Kingdom Part 2, 1:44:24)
  • Happiness crater. Ancient Evil listed about −40% happiness until the Cathedral went up. That is why gold and food suddenly feel broken in that window. (Kingdom Part 2, 1:44:50)
  • Consecrated Weapons node: about +20% damage to undead and prevents undead from reviving in that run. Big iron/gold cost on screen. (Kingdom Part 2, 1:54:28)
  • Hardest-difficulty Steam posts still describe zombies every ~30 seconds if you sit on the quest. Developer: Cathedral is the Church upgrade.

Should you rush it?

The Church upgrade is expensive. One player recommended taking other upgrades first and doing sidequests before the main quest. That is a playstyle report, not a ranked theorycraft list.

A working decision rule without fake numbers:

  1. Keep food from collapsing. People leaving during this window actually reduces zombie spawns (developer).
  2. Do not skip the Church upgrade forever — consecrated weapons are the stated counter.
  3. If gold and stone are both tight, read Best Building Upgrade Order before dumping everything into the Cathedral the moment the quest appears.
  4. Research that supports defense still matters. See Best Research to Unlock First.

Exact upgrade cost, Church level required, and whether any research node is a hard gate are not yet confirmed.

Players also confuse Harbor District, Shipwright, and Alchemist labels on the official screenshots with quest targets. Those are real districts. They are not the Cathedral. The quest wants the Church upgrade.
